Walking

Walk_at_Prats_040The diversity of the landscape in the Pyrenees-Orientals ensures some fabulous walks to suit everybody' s taste.

You don' t have to be super-fit to enjoy some of the breathtaking walks and scenery in the Rousillon region, although if you do choose, there are some great challenges in the area for the seasoned walker.

If hiking is your interest, then the mountains of the Eastern Pyrenees will suit you.

The region starts at sea level and climbs up to over 3000 metres, with an incredibly richness and diversified of plant and animal life.

You begin by approaching the Pyrenees along the coast of the Mediterranean with its salt lakes,  on to the gentle hiils of the olive groves and vineyards inland through peach trees and apple farms rising to the high summer meadows with their stunning views over the amazing landscape of the Pyrenees Orientals out to the Mediterranean Sea.

Then take off for higher climbs around the Canigou mountain (2784m) which dominates the Roussillon plain, or further on to the Carlit mountain (2921m ) which is the highest peak in the Pyrenees Orientales.

You can discover the mountain landscape that reads like a book to unfold its many secrets and traditions that are as old as the granite. Whatever your intention, to climb a peak, to walk off the beaten track, or enjoy a picnic on a bed of alpine grass...you can find the right destination that will live up to your expectations.

Winter also brings snowshoe walking in the higher mountain regions, for this we recommend a guide for 1st timers. We organize this amazing day out including a lunch.

Walking in the Pyreenes Orientals is possible all year round due to its very mild climate but is particularly  enjoyable in spring and autumn seasons.
